Monsignor Anton Agreiter, MHM, DCL, Dip Lit was born in St. Leonhard near Brixen, South Tyrol in 1934, as the youngest of fifteen. He belonged to a race of peoples who speak an old language called Ladin. Though holding an Italian passport, he hailed from the German-speaking area ceded to Italy in 1918.
After studying in several of the Society Colleges, the Monsignor was ordained on 13 July 1953 at Mill Hill London. His first appointment was to Rome to study for his degree in Canon Law (DCL), afterwards returning to Mill Hill to teach in the Seminary.
From there he went to one of the Missions in East Africa before returning to the Society Headquarters becoming Secretary General to the Society. In October 1986 he was appointed by Pope St John Paul II to succeed the late Mgr Spraggon as the Third Prefect Apostolic of the Falkland Islands.
He died on 15 October 2003.
